In Dublin, Ireland, after a cafe worker asked him to wear a mask, an adult man launched a vicious homophobic rant.

In the shocking phone screen, a customer at the Butlers Chocolates cafe in College Green was furious when the barista told him to wear a mask.

On November 18, the staff cordially asked him to wear a mask when buying a bag of chocolate snacks. He ranted, insulted and homophobic remarks at the staff.

According to reports, the man was a fitness trainer and he documented the process when he threatened to call the Irish National Police (also known as Gardaí) and the employee’s manager.

When he threatened the staff with violence, he pressured them and asked if they had children. The worker said no, and the man roared, "Why? Because you are a queer, fuck you."

According to the Irish Mirror, shortly afterwards, when he started hitting the COVID-19 barrier in the cafe and beating a pedestrian, it turned into a violent incident.

"He was yelling in the store, trying to break the COVID protective glass," a cafe worker told the newspaper. "He left, slapped someone in the face outside, and ran away.

"It's really bad," they said, adding that the staff who abused the receiving end were sent home.

"We are scared that this person will come back with a knife or baseball bat. We don't know what this guy is capable of."

In Ireland, people must legally wear masks on public transport, shops and other indoor places. Restaurant staff can also refuse entry for those who refuse to wear it on the way to and from the table.

All over the world, wearing masks — a fabric worn on the face to protect others from the coronavirus — has become the fuse of the ongoing cultural war surrounding the pandemic.

Although there is increasing evidence that masks help prevent the spread of the virus, for some people, the choice of not wearing a mask has become a sense of pride.

Although some people respond to being asked to wear a mask with a dirty expression or roll their eyes, some refusals will escalate into violence and often homophobia.

A Gardaí spokesperson told PinkNews: “Gardaí is investigating a public order incident at a business establishment on Grafton Street, Dublin 2, on November 18, 2021.

"No one has been arrested so far. The investigation is ongoing.

"The Irish police take hatred as the motivation, take any crime or incident seriously, and conduct professional investigations into incidents reported to us.

"The Irish Police encourages anyone who believes that they may be the victim of any crime or incident because of hate motives, to report to any Garda station."
