Royal Oak police are investigating a bank robbery on Tuesday and seeking to identify a suspect.

Police got a 911 call after the 4:41 p.m. robbery from an employee at the Huntington Bank, 4609 Crooks Road, south of 14 Mile Road.

Royal Oak police Lt. Albert Carter said the face-masked man entered the north entrance of the bank off the parking lot and approached a teller.

“He went right up to the teller and demanded the money,” he said. “He implied he had a weapon in his jacket, which she believed was a weapon.”

When the female teller opened her drawer, the man reached over the counter and grabbed an unknown amount of cash from it.

Carter said the man put the cash in the pocket of his jacket.

“We’re just happy the employee complied and no one was hurt,” Carter said. “That’s our biggest concern.”

Several police cars responded to the robbery report, including a Royal Oak K-9 unit.

“Our K-9 dog was able to track from the bank’s exit and west from the parking lot to a nearby side street,” Carter said. “The track ended about a block-and-a-half up the street. We believe that’s where he entered an unknown vehicle and fled.”

The man is described as black, about 5-foot-10, about 130 pounds, and was wearing a black jacket with the hood up, a black face mask, olive green sweatpants, white gym shoes, and possibly had tattoos on his wrists.

Police were in the area for several hours, canvassing neighborhoods and businesses. They were also checking for any surveillance or Ring cameras that may have recorded the robber’s movements.

The face mask he wore covered all but his eyes and part of his nose, police said.

“We’re still gathering video cameras from nearby businesses and piecing that together,” Carter said Wednesday.

Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact Lt. Carter at 248-246-3456.
