Philips Respironics has recalled some face masks used with CPAP and BiPap machines because they have magnetic headgear clips that can interfere with other medical devices.

The recalled masks are the Amara View full face, DreamWisp nasal, DreamWear full, Wisp and Wisp Youth nasal and Therapy mask 3100 NC/SP.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Philips, as of Aug. 30, 2022, “reported 14 serious injuries and 0 deaths related to the use of the recalled masks.

The reported injuries included pacemaker failure leading to pacemaker replacement, a need for shunt adjustment, resetting of automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator, arrhythmia, cognitive changes, headaches, change in heart rate (tachycardia, bradycardia), convulsions (seizures), and irregular blood pressure.”

The medical devices the magnets can interfere with include pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, metallic stents, neurostimulators, cerebral spinal fluid shunts, aneurysm clips, embolic coils, hearing implants, magnetic dentures, some joint replacements and metallic gastrointestinal clips.

People who have a risk are advised to switch to a non-magnetic mask if possible.
