The day after President Joe Biden decided to pardon marijuana smokers, the 79-year-old walked into a bookstore on the University of Pennsylvania campus with his granddaughter. One voice in the crowd outside shouted out: “Yo Joe, legalize that weed.”

WILLIAMSPORT, Md. (AP) — Heading into the kitchen to whip up tasty desserts was almost second nature for Devin Taylor.

Five tribes on California's coast are moving forward in their efforts to protect marine ecosystems as part of the Tribal Marine Stewards Network. The state's Ocean Protection Council recently approved $3.6 million for the first-in-the-nation project. The network is a partnership between the tribes, state government and nonprofit groups aimed at conducting biological research and educating youth about the cultural significance of coastal areas. Its public launch comes three years after Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom apologized for historical violence and mistreatment against Indigenous peoples in the state.

Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz may have talked himself into a death sentence. At his penalty trial last week, prosecutors played video recordings of jailhouse interviews Cruz had this year with mental health experts. He gave frank and sometimes graphic details about his 2018 murder of 17 at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, his planning and his motivations. Lawyers not involved in the case say his statements may have caused some wavering jurors to vote for death. Jury deliberations are expected to begin Wednesday. The panel will decide whether he is sentenced to death or life without parole.

England have been drawn to face European champions Italy in qualification for Euro 2024. Italy beat England on penalties in the Euro 2020 final last summer and did so again in the Nations League last month. Group C also includes Ukraine, beaten by England in the quarterfinals of Euro 2020, along with North Macedonia and Malta.

Packers safety Adrian Amos is active for Green Bay’s game against the New York Giants at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Amos had been in the concussion protocol and was limited in practice this week. He is now set to join a defensive backfield with cornerback Jaire Alexander, who is back from a groin injury. Inactive for the Packers are T Rasheed Walker, T/G Sean Rhyan, WR Samori Toure, DL Devonte Wyatt, and DL Jonathan Ford. For the Giants, the only question mark was DL Leonard Williams, who is inactive with a knee injury.

The Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan has unilaterally cancelled joint military drills between the six nations comprising the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), less than a day before they were due to start on its territory. Kyrgyz defense officials did not specify a reason Sunday for cancelling the “Indestructible Brotherhood-2022” command and staff exercises, which were set to be held Monday to Friday. The move by the government in Bishkek comes a month after CSTO member Armenia criticized the bloc for failing to come to its aid after fighting broke out in its border with Azerbaijan in September, further underscoring possible tensions within the bloc.

Pope Francis has denounced Europe's treatment of migrants as as “disgusting, sinful and criminal.” Francis gave the description on Sunday as he elevated to sainthood an Italian bishop and Italian-born missionary whose work and life paths illustrated the difficulties faced by 19th Century Italian emigrants. Frances departed from prepared remarks to slam Europe’s indifference to migrants who often die during perilous sea crossings. The remarks generated applause from the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the canonization of Don Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, an Italian bishop who founded an order to help Italian emigrants,  and Artedime Zatti, an Italian who emigrated to Argentina where he dedicated his life as a lay-worker to helping the sick.

Germany’s foreign minister is calling for European Union entry bans and asset freezes against those responsible for what she described as brutal repression against anti-government protesters in Iran. The most sustained protests in years against Iran’s theocracy are now in their fourth week. They erupted Sept. 17, after the burial of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman who had died in the custody of Iran’s feared morality police. Since then, protests spread across the country and have been met by a fierce crackdown, in which dozens are estimated to have been killed and hundreds arrested.

Israel says it has reached a settlement to compensate the family of a Palestinian-American man who died earlier this year after he was detained by Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank. The Defense Ministry said Sunday that it had reached an agreement with Asaad’s family, which had filed a claim against the state in an Israeli court. In January, Israeli troops detained Omar Asaad, 78, at a checkpoint in the occupied West Bank, binding his hands and blindfolding him. Israeli troops then unbound his hands and left him face-down in an abandoned building where he was later found unconscious and pronounced dead.

Candidates who have to play to their party’s base during primaries or nominating conventions often shift toward the center when the time comes to seek support from a wider range of voters for the general election. But that hasn’t happened this election year for the Republicans running for Michigan’s top three statewide offices — governor, attorney general and secretary of state. The Nov. 8 election will test whether campaigns designed to resonate with the far-right and highlight strong ties to former President Donald Trump will be enough to win in a traditional swing state.

Whenever historic homes get flooded, building contractors often feel compelled by government regulations to rip out the water-logged wood flooring, tear down the old plaster walls and install new, flood-resistant materials. It’s a hurried approach likely to occur across southwest Florida in the wake of Hurricane Ian. But Virginia restorers Paige Pollard and Kerry Shackelford say they can prove that historic building materials can withstand repeated flooding. The two are part of an emerging movement that aims to prove the resilience of older homes as more fall under the threat of rising seas and intensifying storms. They say their research could eventually help convince officials and contractors that historic building materials often need cleaning — not replacing — after a flood.

Many political watchers expected Gov. Kristi Noem to cruise to reelection this year in Republican-dominated South Dakota against a Democratic challenger without statewide experience. But Noem's frequent out-of-state travels on behalf of GOP candidates, as well as recent ethics stumbles, have given Democrats license to dream of an upset. Or perhaps make Noem's race against state lawmaker Jamie Smith close enough to raise questions about her viability on the national stage. Smith has cast himself as a moderate and so far has run a mostly upbeat campaign. The governor recently came out with an ad that tied Smith to President Joe Biden, who won 36% of South Dakota’s vote in 2020.

Taylor Fritz defeated Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in an all-American Japan Open final on Sunday. It was a perfect five days for Fritz in Tokyo, who arrived at the tournament just after the end of his seven days of quarantine in Seoul following a positive COVID-19 test. Tiafoe had come into the final on the back of winning 13 straight singles tiebreakers, but Fritz dominated the final with his aggressive hitting.

Police say the roof of a home made of mud and wood in northern Pakistan caved in, killing nine family members, including eight siblings. A police officer said the incident in the town of Chilas in the Gilgit Baltistan region claimed the lives of four daughters and four sons of a restaurant waiter and his wife. Khan said the father was at work when it happened. Neighbors who heard the crashing sound of the house coming down rushed to the home but efforts to rescue the family were unsuccessful. Police said the siblings killed were ages 2 to 12.

Greece’s Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias has arrived in Cairo. He is holding talks Sunday with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukry. Aside from discussing Egyptian-Greek ties, Dendias has said the talks would focus on the latest developments in the Aegean Sea, Libya and the Middle East. He was likely referring to tensions with Turkey over the alleged deployment of dozens of U.S.-made armored vehicles by Greece to the Aegean islands Samos and Lesbos. He also referred to memorandums of understanding between Turkey and the government of Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, one of Libya’s rival governments. Egypt and Greece have strengthened their ties in recent years. The two nations, along with Cyprus, signed maritime border agreements.

Scotland’s leader says she will push on with her campaign to take her country out of the United Kingdom, even if she loses a Supreme Court case seeking the authority for a new independence referendum. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wants to hold a referendum in October 2023, but the U.K. government has said no. Britain’s top court is due to hear arguments starting Tuesday on whether Sturgeon's government can call an independence vote without consent from London. Sturgeon said Sunday that if she loses the court case, she will make the next U.K. election a de facto plebiscite on independence. She says that would be “a last resort,” if a referendum is blocked.

Former top amateur Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra shot a final-round 69 and won the LIV Golf Invitational-Bangkok by three strokes over Patrick Reed. Lopez-Chacarra had a three-round, 19-under total of 197 after the storm-delayed finish on the newly opened Stonehill Golf Club course north of Bangkok. Reed shot a closing 67 while Paul Casey (65), Richard Bland (68) and Sihwan Kim (68) were tied for third, four shots behind Lopez-Chacarra.

PITTSBURGH — Even judging by his own standard of scathing self-assessments, Kasperi Kapanen offered up a doozy this week when discussing the struggles he experienced during the 2021-22 regular season.

These big ones didn’t get away.

TAMPA, Fla. — Even after accomplishing as much as Lightning captain Steven Stamkos has over his Hall of Fame career, building confidence still means everything.

ATLANTA — It’s not as if the Braves haven’t won anything. Since 1990, they’ve won their division 20 times over 31 completed seasons. Over three decades, they’ve been good far more often than they’ve been bad. So why have the past 13 months felt so …

LAS VEGAS — The NHL might not be wide open this season. But it feels uncertain.

The why and the what hardly were the most compelling issues when it came to the Miami Heat’s decision with Tyler Herro.

NEW YORK — Hard as it must be for the Citi Field faithful to accept the fact the Mets won 101 games, the second-most wins in their history, and still wound up as a wild card, there is this dose of hard reality: The Braves were simply a better team.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen clinched his second consecutive Formula One drivers’ title by winning the Japanese Grand Prix in the rain at Suzuka. Verstappen has been dominant all season and claimed the title with four races remaining on the 22-race calendar. The Dutchman started the race from pole in pouring rain only for it to be stopped after only two laps as several cars crashed. It was resumed two hours later with 28 of the 53 laps completed and Verstappen leading the whole way. He was followed by teammate Sergio Perez in second and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. They are the only drivers that could have overtaken Verstappen for the title.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The wives of Fort Myers’ construction workers, painters, roofers, landscapers and electricians and their families gathered at the food pantry of Jesus the Worker church on Thursday, as they had every day that week.

The U.S. has accused Saudi Arabia of siding with Russia after it led OPEC+ in a shock decision to slash crude output, keeping oil prices high at a time of global concern about inflation. The world’s largest oil exporter insists the decision was about economics, not politics.

Former President Donald Trump’s quest to establish a Florida-based social media platform as a conservative alternative to Twitter will face a critical vote on Monday when investors decide whether to extend a deadline allowing more time for the federal government to sign off on the deal.

DALLAS (AP) — Quinn Ewers threw for 289 yards and four touchdowns in his return to the Texas lineup and the Longhorns beat Oklahoma 49-0. It was the most lopsided loss ever for the 3-3 Sooners, who have their first three-game losing streak since 1998. Bijan Robinson ran for 130 yards and two…

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Stetson Bennett raced 64 yards for a touchdown, Daijun Edwards scored three times on the ground and No. 2 Georgia ran over listless Auburn 42-10. The Bulldogs got two short touchdown runs by Edwards and one from Kenny McIntosh to build a 21-3 in the third quarter. Georgia …

Anger among civilians is rising in a majority Kurdish district in northwestern Iran that has become one of the hotspots of protests. The Associated Press spoke to six activists in the northern city of Sanandaj, 300 miles (500 kilometers) from the capital Tehran. They described an evolving protest movement that has shifted from mass gatherings to more scattered protests and other signs of civil disobedience amid a harsh government crackdown. Protests erupted after the burial of a 22-year-old woman who died in Iranian police custody and have persisted with protests in neighborhoods, schools, with burning tires and commercial strikes.

A Belarusian opera singer who almost lost it all for publicly opposing his nation's authoritarian leader is rebuilding his life in the U.S. Ilya Silchukou lives in suburban Boston with his wife and three children and teaches music to middle school students while he tries to revive his singing career. The baritone was the lead soloist at Belarus' national opera, but was fired for publicly opposing President Alexander Lukashenko after the nation's 2020 election, which many said was fraudulent. He has started performing again and is trying to secure auditions at major U.S. opera houses. His hope is to one day return to Belarus.

Ben Gulbranson threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Tre’Shaun Harrison with 13 seconds remaining and Oregon State overcame a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Stanford 28-27. The Cardinal appeared to be in control of the game when they took a 24-10 lead into the fourth quarter with the Oregon State using a backup quarterback. Instead, they collapsed down the stretch and lost their 11th straight game against an FBS opponent.

Israeli police have arrested at least three Palestinian suspects in connection with a deadly shooting at a Jerusalem checkpoint, and security forces were searching for the suspected gunman. Police said Sunday that a large force of officers, soldiers and Shin Bet security agency operatives were involved in the search. The shooter opened fire on a military checkpoint in east Jerusalem late Saturday, killing a female Israeli soldier and wounding three others, one of them seriously. The Israeli military identified the soldier as 18-year-old Noa Lazar. Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid offered condolences to Lazar’s family, saying: “We will not be silent and we will not rest until we bring the abominable killers to justice.”
