An importer of masks stated that a recent study found that some brands did not meet Thai industrial standards, which weakened its sales and credibility among customers.

Ta-To Contacts, an importer of the Lepono facial mask brand, told the Bangkok Post that it has suffered negative financial impact due to research conducted by the Thai Consumer Council (TCC). It said that the brand's reputation has been questioned.

After the research was released, customers raised concerns and sought explanations.

The company’s director Sonia Yamdagni insists that the product is of high quality because it has been approved by the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and passed Intertek, a British standard test using the ASTM F 2100-2019 international test standard. .

According to the test, the bacterial filtration efficiency of this product is 99.9%, and the average filtration efficiency of sub-micron particles is 98.17%.

The committee's report stated that two-thirds of the 60 mask brands on the market are of poor quality.

Sophon Hnoorat, head of the consumer rights protection department of the Consumer Council of Thailand, said that after the report was released, the committee received many complaints from mask manufacturers and retailers.

He said the committee welcomes the opinions of these companies and is willing to share the information they provide to consumers for inspection, but added that the committee supports the findings.

He said these tests were carried out in laboratories using Thai industrial standards.

"Our job is to protect the rights and interests of consumers. We have confirmed our information and will not correct it. Consumers decide which brand to buy after weighing the information provided by both parties," he said.

The World Bank said on Tuesday that due to the impact of the coronavirus outbreak, Thailand’s economy is still expected to grow by 1% this year, but driven by the recovery of service industry activity, growth next year is expected to accelerate to 3.9%.
