It’s probably time to update your mask.

With the COVID-19 Omicron variant spreading fast, health experts recommend not only wearing your mask more, but upgrading to a N95 or other high-filtration mask or respirator when you are indoors in public places, according to a recent NPR report.

“Cloth masks are not going to cut it with omicron,” Linsey Marr, a researcher at Virginia Tech who studies how viruses transmit in the air, told NPR for the report.

More than 1 million COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Massachusetts over the nearly two-year pandemic, state health officials reported Tuesday.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 9,228 new cases Tuesday, bringing the total to 1,002,266 throughout the pandemic. At least 10,040 new cases were reported on Friday alone, surpassing the previous day’s record of 9,042 cases.

People entering Springfield-owned properties will be required to wear masks, beginning immediately. All city businesses will be required to have employees and customers wear masks beginning Jan. 3, Mayor Domenic Sarno said Tuesday.
