Prime Minister Liz Truss damaged Britain’s system of government by sacking a top civil servant and removing another in her first days in office, according to two former heads of the Civil Service.

Robin Butler, who served under three prime ministers, and Gus O’Donnell, the Cabinet Secretary from 2005 to 2011, warned that her decision to fire Tom Scholar, the respected permanent secretary to the Treasury, could undermine the country at a time of monumental change. A powerful storm traveling north through the Bering Strait is causing widespread flooding in several western Alaska coastal communities, knocking out power and sending residents fleeing for higher ground. The force of the water forced some homes off their foundations Saturday, and one home in Nome was floating down a river until it got caught at a bridge. The storm is what remains of Typhoon Merbok, a storm that is also influencing weather patterns as far away as California, where strong winds and a rare late-summer rainstorm are expected. In Alaska, there have been no reports of injuries or deaths from the storm.

Shaquan Loyal’s 43-yard interception return for a touchdown was the turning point of the game as Rutgers improved to 3-0 with a 16-14 victory over Temple and made Greg Schiano the winningest coach in program history. Schiano broke a tie for most wins with 79. He was tied with Frank Burns, who was the head coach from 1973 to 1983, including the undefeated 1976 team that was 11-0. The score by Loyal, a sophomore defensive back, was the only touchdown for the Scarlet Knights, who floundered offensively with just 201 total yards.
