A recent study published in Scientific Reports states that the risk of re-use of the same mask is high. Researchers from Japan’s Kindai University found bacteria and fungus on both sides of the face mask. The research team studied 109 medical students on their mask preferences and analyzed the fungus and bacteria on both sides of the mask. Microbial colony counts were compared to individuals who wore the mask for one day (three to six hours) and for 2 days or more, depending on the type of face mask (polyurethane, non-woven).

They found that the number of bacterial colonies inside the mask was high. The study also said that bacteria were found in 99% of the samples on the facial side and 94% on the outer side. On the other hand, the fungus was less on the facial side (79% of the samples) than on the outer side (95%). The study also found that 78% wore non-stitched face masks and disposed of them after a day, while 58% of other mask types wore the same mask for two days or more. It was seen that the number of fungus increased significantly with the use of masks for a long time.
