Within 24 hours, the two cities in the Coachella Valley took two completely different approaches to wearing masks.

On Thursday, there was a unanimous vote to keep the current COVID-19 rules at least until the city council meeting on January 27, when changes will be considered.

The City Council voted unanimously to retain the following rules;

The City Council adopted the recommendation of Palm Springs Emergency Management Coordinator Danny DeSelms.

"My professional opinion is that I would recommend waiting this winter," he said. "Historically, winter is a time when more endemic diseases appear and more people get sick. Holidays bring people closer and travel more."

DeSelms said there has been a slight increase in COVID-19 cases recently, but it has remained relatively stable over the past few weeks. The level of cases is also well below the level at which the peak of last winter’s winter had already begun.

Just before the 24th, the Cathedral City Council chose to let its indoor masks expire today, which is Friday, December 10.

The decision came when City Manager Charlie McClendon stated that the number of COVID-19 cases in Cathedral City has been on the rise in the past two weeks. He said that as of Monday, December 6, the city had an average of 10 new cases per day.
