Donors make a difference

COVID-19 is more likely to thrive and mutate in places with high transmission rates and low vaccine acquisition rates. The new Omicron variant appeared in this case.

Every day, around the world, contributions to WHO are providing vaccines and other tools to slow the spread of the virus and stop new variants.

For example, Ethiopia has just started a major vaccination campaign, and the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the delivery of large quantities of vaccines to Afghan refugees.

At the same time, Cape Verde has achieved its global vaccination target for 2021, and has worked with several other African countries to achieve WHO's year-end target by vaccinating 40% of the population.

The generous donation also equipped Belize with new electronic equipment to better organize its vaccination program, brought Zambia a new supply of quality-assured masks, and shipped a batch to Antigua and Barbuda New vaccine.

The following are detailed information from our WHO regional and country offices:

The country began mass vaccine deployment on November 16, involving 6.2 million doses of vaccine and 28,000 vaccine managers.

The event was supported by UNICEF, AMREF, Resolve to Save Lives Initiative, Save the Children, PATH, USAID, Alive & Thrive, Clinton Health Access Initiative and Johns Hopkins University.

These 1.6 million doses of vaccine are provided as part of COVAX's humanitarian buffer, a process that provides countries with vaccines for vulnerable groups in humanitarian settings.

The influx of refugees is expected to require more vaccine shipments.

This country with a population of 556,000, along with four other African countries — Seychelles, Mauritius, Morocco and Tunisia — has achieved the goal of vaccinating 40% of its population by the end of this year.

"This is a major achievement," said Dr. Daniel Kertesz, WHO Representative in Cape Verde. "This shows that with enough vaccines, committed health professionals, participating political leadership, and the will of the people, significant progress can be made in the fight against COVID-19."

Laptops, tablets, printers and wireless routers provide Belize with the technology needed to effectively run the country’s vaccination program.

Minister of Health and Health Michel Chebat said: “I cannot emphasize how much these donations have helped the Belize country... in the fight against the COVID-19 virus.” “Thanks to us in the Pan American Health Organization/WHO The ongoing support of the organization’s partners."

In the past few months, the Ministry of Health of the Federal Republic of Germany has donated surgical and medical masks to more than 100 countries.

Masks are a key measure to curb the spread of COVID-19, so they really help save lives," said Dr. Nathan Bakyaita, WHO Representative in Zambia.

The country welcomes the 19,200 doses of vaccine provided by Spain with support from Canada and delivered via COVAX in mid-November. The new shipment brought the COVAX dose received in the country to 60,000 doses. Antigua and Barbuda has a population of approximately 98,000 people.

“This donation will help increase Antigua and Barbuda’s access to vaccines and will support the country’s efforts to ensure that the country can achieve its vaccination goals by all possible means. The Pan American Health Organization welcomes the solidarity of Spain ," said Dr. Itades Gebrau, the representative of the Pan American Health Organization/WHO.
